That was one of the nice surprises of the latest State of Play: Returnal, a PS5-exclusive rogue-lite game that just got a major free update. The program includes a new multiplayer for two players, as well as an endless game mode “Sisyphus Tower”. Good reason to return with Selene to the dangerous lands of Atropos? Here is our opinion.
Despite a fairly unanimous critical reception (16/20 in our columns and 86/100 on Metacritic), Returnal actually caused controversy. Very practical in this mode is that it can be activated at any time and without any restrictions: multiplayer is available even from a new game (just play for a few minutes and lose to the first sub-boss). Also note that there is not one Chronosis Portal, but one at the beginning of each main area. In other words, help can be either random or constant throughout the adventure. The best thing about all this is that The two-player Returnal mode is well balanced and not overly liberal.. Yes, it’s possible to revive a fallen teammate indefinitely – as long as their savior is also alive anyway – but it’s really not that much. On the PlayStation Blog, Studio Housemarque explains that it has re-balanced the damage in this configuration to keep the demanding experience it holds dear. Yes, and during our games, we obviously did not have the impression of a “knurled game”. The only downside is that temporary upgrades collected along the way are subject to the first-come-first-served rule. No bonuses apply to both heroes at the same time, and Housemarque does not adapt its menus to help manage builds without voice chat (no voting system or emotes). Its judicious use seems indispensable for effective progress.

On the other hand, it’s good that no one in the tower of Sisyphus can hear you scream. In this endless mode, it is impossible to activate multiplayer, and this is normal. The place was planned as a kind of condensed return experience with faster buildup than in the main adventure. As such, Tower of Sisyphus offers a smart cocktail of action in the purest rogue-lite tradition, with a variety of enemies, regular power-ups to choose from to get as far as possible (there’s even a points multiplier aspect to keep), and fast-paced combat. On this last point, Housemarque puts the use of the grappling hook at the center of their arenas, which is also a must for accessing the Tower from the crash site, just to master the title long before heading there. The item can be obtained by defeating Ixion, the first boss.
Obviously, test after test, we recognize randomly arranged rooms, and the order in which they appear often suggests a weapon, life. But the Tower of Sisyphus holds another secret: this mode brings new elements to Selena’s hazy past.. As you climb, you’ll come across never-before-seen audio recordings, as well as useful items in a new dimension frozen in time outside the heroine’s home in the main adventure. It’s a great idea to come up with a scenario where the latter might previously have been overshadowed by a very present difficulty or a branch that was too fragmented. The icing on the cake: all this gives rhythm to the sessions in the Tower, which, therefore, is not just a “beastly” endless mode. Important objects are placed here in frankly smart places that make you want to use them at the end of the cycle. Of course, in order to reveal all the secrets of the building (there are both new powers and enemies), you will have to go as far as possible without dying. And Housemarque knows how to encourage us to do so.
