Sony reveals its response to Xbox Game Pass

After months of rumors, here is the new PlayStation Plus. Forget about Spartacus, everything is now official and available in three offers from 60 to 120 euros, which will be available gradually from June.

We knew it under the codename Spartacus, and now Sony’s new PlayStation Plus has officially arrived. This new subscription formula should combine the old PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now under one service. Sony made the announcement on Tuesday and said the rollout will begin in June in Asia, followed by North America, Europe and the rest of the countries where PS Plus has been offered so far.

PlayStation Plus plans and pricing

Let’s start with the essentials, here’s the new grid of PlayStation Plus packages.

  • PS Plus Essential: €8.99/month (€24.99 for 3 months, €59.99/year)
  • PS Plus Extra: €13.99 per month (€39.99 for 3 months, €99.99 per year)
  • PS Plus Premium: €16.99/month (€49.99 for 3 months, €119.99/year)

The old PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now are disappearing. PlayStation players will then be faced with three offers. launch this new offer is scheduled for June 2022.

PS Plus Essential: Online play and 2 free games per month

At the same price as the old PS Plus, the PS Plus Essential package includes its benefits: access to online play, online save storage, promotions on the PlayStation Store, and games offered every month.

Beware, Sony is now only promising two downloadable games per month. We’re used to seeing 3 or 4 games offered on PlayStation Plus every month, including PS5 games. Nothing is specified about this.

  • Price: €8.99 per month (€24.99 for 3 months, €59.99 per year)

PS Plus Extra: Catalog of games to download on PS4 and PS5

The next pack is called PS Plus Extra and includes all the benefits of PS Plus Essential plus a big addition: access to a catalog of approximately 400 PS4 and PS5 games.

It’s the closest thing to Xbox Game Pass, but beware, Sony doesn’t promise to integrate their next games as soon as they launch. These are hits from PlayStation Studios or partners to download to your console. Among the first entries are Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, God of War, Return, Mortal Kombat 11 as well as Death strand.

  • Price: €13.99 per month (€39.99 for 3 months, €99.99 per year)

PS Plus Premium: cloud gaming and “classic” games PlayStation

Again, the PS Plus Premium plan takes advantage of the previous plan and adds more features. This time, Sony offers us a retrogaming service with 340 games, including a catalog of PlayStation, PS2 and PSP “great classics” for download or streaming, or PS3 games available only for streaming.

Access to game streaming is cloud gaming through what used to be PlayStation Now. Therefore, you must live in the territory that offered the service (USA, Canada, Japan, UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Sweden).

That’s not all, PS Plus Premium subscribers will also be eligible for limited-time trials of certain games. We can imagine we can test god of ragnarok within hours of release, or one of the many multiplayer games released on the PlayStation.

  • Price: €16.99 per month (€49.99 for 3 months, €119.99 per year)

What about those who are already subscribers?

PlayStation Plus subscribers, as it exists today, would logically jump to the PS Plus Essential offer. PlayStation Now subscribers will be upgraded to the PS Plus Premium offer, which includes game streaming. A great deal for those interested as PS Now was priced at €60/year versus €120/year for the new PS Plus Premium.
