How Oppo wants to catch up with Samsung, Xiaomi and Apple in France

THURSDAY PRO // Four years after entering the French market, Oppo is the fourth smartphone seller in it. The Chinese brand is banking on partnerships with Roland-Garros in particular and its new Find X5 series to move closer to the top three. We take stock with Denis Morel, CEO of Oppo France.

In June 2018, Oppo landed in France with great fanfare, placing small plates inside large ones in the Louvre pyramid. In this case, the Chinese have bet on a high level by introducing the Find X and then its new flagship. Since then, Oppo has climbed to fourth place among smartphone makers in France with an 8% market share behind Samsung (27%), Xiaomi (23%) and Apple (22%), all of which have surpassed the 20% mark. figures from Canalys.

Globally, Oppo also ranks fourth after the same top three. The Chinese manufacturer, like its compatriot Xiaomi, resumed its march forward in 2021 after a sudden stop caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition to the market recovery, the two brands have benefited from the misadventures of Huawei, which was once number one in the world. Ren Zhengfei’s group, still hit by US sanctions, is facing a sharp drop in global sales.

8% market share in France

While Huawei is trying to climb the slope, Oppo is taking market share from its competitors. “In 2021, we went up in France from 4.7% to 8.7%. We are seeing a 140% growth over the last year, the strongest in the top 5.”, welcomes Denis Morel, CEO of Oppo France. To make itself known to the French, the manufacturer apparently relied on its three Find X, Reno and A ranges to entice any budget, as well as a marketing strategy.

Thus, in 2019, the brand received a lot of publicity, becoming the first Chinese sponsor in the history of Roland-Garros. He also struck a double whammy by joining Wimbledon in the United Kingdom. These initiatives seem to be bearing fruit as Oppo is now a brand known to more than one in two French people, up from one in three at the end of 2020. “Sport is a good vector for getting closer to our users and developing close relationships with them”says Denis Morel.

New Find X5 series to advance on premium

To cement the good relationship with the French, Oppo is betting on its new Find X5 series introduced by the Find X5 Pro. “an iconic model with which we will try to establish a much stronger position in the premium market”, explains the CEO. Launched at a high price of 1299 euros, this device, which is supposed to combine all the know-how and innovation of the brand, faces less fierce competition consisting of, among others, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, Sony Xperia 1 III, Google Pixel 6 Pro, but also its predecessor Oppo Find X3 Pro.

How the price table works

After the first grip, which showed us that this is a very serious contender in the premium segment, our test revealed the smartphone. “who doesn’t show off when it comes to photography, not playing the megapixel count card, but rather software processing”. An observation that made our tester write what’s up with this Find X5 Pro, “OPPO confirms it deserves its place in the big leagues”.

With that in mind, the Chinese will also be able to rely on certain products to act as tech showcases, such as the Find N foldable smartphone or the Air Glass augmented reality glasses (currently reserved for the Chinese market). Their entry into the European market could take Oppo to the next level and bring it closer to Samsung and Apple, the current benchmarks in the premium segment.
