Review of Weird West by

A new Game Pass entry and the first offering from WolfEye Studios, Weird West is an addictive and action-packed RPG.

In 2019, Rafael Colantonio and Julien Roby leave the well-established Arkane enclosure to embark on new, more adventurous journeys. Under the auspices of WolfEye, their new banner, they develop Weird West; An action-RPG published by Devolver takes us to the wild American West, where cowboys coexist with zombies and nasty mermaids. Our hand will trace the crossed paths of five hardened heroes.

Western atmosphere and immersive sim

With an isometric view and shaded aesthetic, Weird West makes you think of a huge cartoon playing field where tiny pieces come to life with unmistakable brutality. But the distance does not prevent the WolfEye title from creating a very special atmosphere.. A hoarse voice will guide you through the sleeping quarters and hostile domains of a charged western. The soundtrack hits the mark, and majestic faces drawn by artist Cédric Peiraverné, visible in the dialogue bubbles, bring the little characters to life. Here, every building is definitely very stylized, permeable and contains generous resources to loot. Side quests and unexpected encounters are nice and frequent bonuses. And if you’re always moving towards action and confrontation, history doesn’t get left behind. Not without a few gaps, but still entertaining, it takes place with charming characters who develop within a framework of lore that is as quirky as it is lovable.

Your first mate is Jane, a formidable marksman and former bounty hunter who was forced back into service after the gruesome discovery of her son’s corpse at the bottom of her door. The culprits are the Stillwaters, a group of mercenaries who shamelessly kidnapped his soul mate as well. The next protagonist is a pig-headed man transformed by an infamous witch. Their fates are partly up to you. A successor to the immersive simulation codes already featured in Prey and Dishonored, Weird West is shaped by your actions.. Devastate the whole city and it will become a ghost until the end of the game, save souls in trouble and they will come to your aid in difficult trials. Your reputation matters, as do some of your decisions, which leave their mark on a sentient world that evolves in the cycle of day and night; the terrain obeys your actions: glass bottles can be broken in flight, ropes can be hung from a windowsill to penetrate it, oil lamps can light up. The immersion and atmosphere boxes are brilliantly tested.

Twin stick shooter and RPG

In Weird West, the action takes place in real time. The mechanics are like an intuitive twin stick shooter with a satisfying feel. The left joystick is used for movement and the right joystick helps to draw a line of sight on the screen. Operation is generally smooth, but the PlayStation 4 was not without some slowdowns. Overcoming dangers can be difficult, but never frustrating; hostile zones can always be captured in several ways, for example, by solving small puzzles. Stealth is an option, but enemy density sometimes makes it more difficult. The quick save system mitigates mistakes. Not very tenacious at first, your adventurer tunes in to interesting crops. Nempa Fetishes, the petrified claws of dead creatures, can be used to gain class and weapon skills that can save the day. Golden cards unlock new talents, which thankfully persist from one character to the next. And then there are allies: in your missions, you can send up to two fellow travelers, including the main characters of your previous chapters. But in case of death, there is no way to bring them back to life.

Your weapons have different range and damage. Switching from one to the other is easy thanks to your wheel. But the choice must be deliberate, because there is little ammunition. A rather pleasant aspect that makes you save resources and make decisions quickly. Humans and ugly creatures parade under your bullets or under the sharp blade of your machete. And, of course, their abilities are varied. Only if the terrain reacts intelligently, it’s not the same for the enemies at all. Some will barely notice your presence when you’ve just lowered your companion just a few meters. Another spotted the corpse at a glance, which we wisely hid in the bushes. Annoying. But forgivable, since the expanse of Weird West is as vast as it is generous. Any point on the map can be selected for navigation. And if you choose to cross on foot, expect a few ambushes from bandits, coyotes, or even rabid bears. An excellent program that will keep you busy for about twenty hours straight.
