Nintendo Switch Sports Preview: Wii Sports Continuity Seems Guaranteed on Switch

Preview Nintendo Switch Sports: Wii Sports continuity seems assured

The next generation of Wii Sports will return on April 29, 2022 in a hybrid car. Like its predecessor, will Nintendo Switch Sports become a must-have for its console?

The real muse of its console, Wii Sports, has been bringing generations of the same family together for years to play bowling or golf in the living room. Even today, we find that the game has sold almost 82 million copies connected to televisions in nursing homes. Nearly sixteen years later, and on the back of everyone’s enthusiasm, the license is about to offer a direct sequel to the hybrid console. Will Nintendo Switch Sports live up to its predecessor?

Offline, we were able to take part in an hour-long session on Nintendo Switch Sports. It is enough to make an overview of each of the disciplines offered at the start of the game.

The core experience we love so much

When it releases on April 29, Nintendo Switch Sports will offer six classes versus five, just like Wii Sports: football, badminton, volleyball, chambara, bowling and tennis. Quite a varied menu on paper, which this fall will be complemented by an additional addition: Golf. Luckily, the update will be free and will update the program a bit, which we may have quickly bypassed. Mii are no longer in the spotlight when you start your first game, although you can trade them in for brand new avatars of your own. The incarnated characters take on a more “chibi” and playful air, which frankly doesn’t displease us. Each discipline comes with a welcome guide that tells you what moves to do for all strokes. And right from the start, Nintendo Switch Sports reminds us of fond memories of family minigames. Problems easily lend themselves to short sessions of joy and good mood. The controls are quite intuitive and comfortable for every sport. Before you start playing, please note that it would be wiser to equip your Joy-cons with wrist straps.

While exercises can be limited to simple gestures, they also lend themselves easily to more complex tasks. In tennis, for example, you can adjust your movements to allow for multiple lifts and hits of the ball.. Along with badminton, we consider these sports to be the easiest and most enjoyable to learn. Volleyball, more technical, but no less fun. Your abilities can be tested around the world in the online game promised as the basis of this new experience.. Therefore, it will be about trying to enter the professional league of each discipline. The online functionality has not yet been tested by us, but it is interesting from the point of view of competitiveness.

New and great classics

In addition to new disciplines that are useful to discover, such as tennis and badminton, some classic games offer notable originality: bowling, for example, has optional obstacle courses.. This also applies to chambars, these duels originated in the Wii Sports Resort, which consist of driving an opponent off a platform by sabering and parrying them. If an activity can be as enjoyable as it is fast, it offers several types of accessories for good replay value. : one sword, one attack sword, or two swords. Football is ultimately our gray area. The hip belt, a great addition to the episode, is currently only compatible with penalty shootouts. Until this summer, traditional matches were played only by hand with huge balls. And, despite the sprint scale, races that are harder to master than other sports currently lack dynamism and vivacity.

Our impressions

For now, Nintendo Switch Sports promises an experience that will quickly bring back good memories of Wii Sports. While retaining some classic elements but not without new additions, Nintendo is dusting off its consumer license by adding long-awaited new features. However, the game will not show all its features at launch and will have to arm itself with summer updates to convince in particular in its football.
